My first try at documentaries

My friend Issac and I were recently asked to head a crew to film a documentary segment and public service announcement about the World March, a 3 month long walk around the world for global nuclear de-proliferation and nonviolence.

We set up at Stanley Sheinbaum's house, as he was hosting a fundraiser and get-together for some big-wigs in LA (Clooney cancelled last minute, but Haskell Wexler and the owner of Warner Bros showed up) in order to spread the word of the movement. Sheinbaum has had a hand in US politics for the last 4 decades, and has been extremely important in handlings of both the Vietnam War and relations with the Middle East.

Our budget was fairly tight, but we were still able to rent almost $10,000 worth of equipment. We interviewed the guests and shot some candid footage throughout the night, and captialized on the food that had been prepared by the professional chefs. Overall, a crazy, unforgettable experience.

The final documentary won't be out for a year or so, but look for the PSA to be posted on Proacktive in the near future.

Back in June, me and the guys took a weekend to go to Milwaukee and Chicago to see some baseball. This has always been my favorite thing to do in the summer, especially since the alternative would be to see Twins games at the Metrodome. Outdoor baseball is awesome as it is, but being at Miller Park and Wrigley Field - two of the most exciting stadiums to see a game in - certainly made it a trip to remember.

When moved by waves, the device's double acting pistons push seawater ashore via high pressure flow lines, where it is converted to power using tried and true hydroelectric generators. Since the hydroelectric plant is located onshore, it is accessible for maintenance 24-7. My thoughts: Watchmen

I finally got to see Watchmen last night at the UV, and I must say I am overly pleased with what I saw. Director Zach Snyder (300, Dawn of the Dead) did an amazing job with the story, creating a world that truly felt like an alternate 1985, and the fight/CGI scenes were unparalleled by anything I have seen recently.

Synder did a great job with Dr. Manhattan and his whole array of superpowers (including his massive genitalia), and meshed him in well with the backstory of The Comedian, which came to be my favorite part of the movie...the questioning of humankind definitely reminded me of The Dark Knight, but the characters in Watchmen prevented the moral questioning from seeming too redundant (given the fact that it wasn't Batman, but a massive blue guy, in charge of saving Earth).

That being said, for all that effort that went into making this visually stunning, some more time could've been spent on the acting...I realize this is a comic book movie, so inevitably it is going to have some cheesy moments, but certain points left me questioning why Patrick Wilson was cast as Nite Owl II, or why Malin Akerman was ca--oh wait, I know why she got the part. Fortunately, Rorschach saved the entire movie for me, seeing as he was the biggest badass I have ever seen in a superhero movie (Downey Jr. gets a close second on that).

Aside from the acting, I really didn't find many major problems, and even though I was crammed into the second row the length didn't bother me that much...I'm giving it 3 out of 4 stars.

TWO BIG RECRUITS coming our way as of today...RENARDO SIDNEY (#5 player in the country) and SOLOMON HILL (#96 on ESPN 100)...both from Fairfax, CA...they will join Noel Johnson and Derrick Williams as our 2009 class.
These guys are beasts, and playing together in high school will definitely help us on the chemistry end...
Hopefully Demar and Gibson (and Hackett and Lewis lol) will stay, Steveson will play out of his mind, and Floyd isn't actually cheating to get all these guys haha...if it al falls into place, we --ready for it-- may just win a NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP. lol we would be SO good. I guess we'll see.

Oscar Wrap-Up

Overall, good oscars, and its comforting to know that I can still laugh at Steve Martin.

My thoughts:

Best Picture - Slumdog was a good (yet predictable) pick, Doubt should've been nominated, Milk was definitely a close second (in my mind). I still have to see the reader to make a judgment on it...

Best Actor - Sean Penn. Perfect.

Best Actress - Kate Winslet? Didn't see the movie, but I would've gone with Meryl Streep.

Best Director - Danny Boyle, Slumdog. Good choice, although Gus Van Zant (Milk) was a damn close second.

Best Supporting Actor - We all knew it was going to be Heath Ledger, and no one wanted to say otherwise...even me lol. I'm glad he won.

Best Supporting Actress - Penelope Cruz...didn't see it. I figured Doubt would come away with it...Amy Adams did an awesome job, and Viola Davis was good enough to be nominated on 10 minutes of screen time. Whatever.

By the way, Jolie is still really hot.

Some potential World Cup matchups were seen today and yesterday as international friendlies started across the world...Argentina and Brazil (unfortunately) had good showings, beating France and Italy 2-0 respectively. Big game tonight as US v Mexico starts in Columbus...I'm looking for Beasley to finally step it up this World Cup, and tonight will be a good indicator.

Shepard Fairey was arrested Friday night on his way to the Institute of Contemporary Art for a kickoff event for his first solo exhibition, called “Supply and Demand.”

Two warrants were issued for Fairey on Jan. 24 after police determined he’d tagged property in two locations with graffiti based on the Andre the Giant street art campaign from his early career, Officer James Kenneally said. One of the locations was the railroad trestle by the landmark Boston University bridge over the Charles River, police said.

Obviously these are old videos, but I came across these again today and had to post them. As a journalist myself, I am honestly embarrassed that these two are on the air, let alone have their own tv/radio shows. You don't have to agree with me, but please, try to tell me two far, far, far liberals with their own television show and a national audience (John Stewart and Stephen Colbert don't count, whatever you might say). Even more, these two are constantly being corrected and called out on their own shows, but, with the unnerving help from Fox, they finish off any segment with some witty comment to secure the support of their predominately 60+ year old audience, despite the hollow argument they had presented only moments before. And by the way, John Gibson mocked Heath Ledger's death the day after he died. Not cool.

Easily one of the most anticipated hip-hop albums for the next couple of months (detox doesn't count lol)...I have grown to love Kid Cudi, and apparently so has every frat here at USC...everytime you walk down the row, all you can here is Crookers Day N Night coming from 15 different directions...anyways, some of his 'sky high' stuff and the collabs on 808's were enough to get me hooked, so this sits near the top. He himself has said a release date is uncertain, but that he hopes to get it out in the spring sometime...

USC in March Madness -
With a 1-2 record the last two years in the tournament, I am praying for a turnaround...we have the firepower to go far, but we seriously need to get our act together if we're gonna make a run. Taj, D Hack, and Dwight Lewis need to keep doing their thing, and Derozan needs to calm down! He is such a natural player (in addition to an absolute beast), and I feel like he is still pretty rattled in D1 basketball. This is our year...I don't want to wait to see if we can get Renardo Sidney.

"Grammy winning rapper Lupe Fiasco has helped provide warmth for hundreds of children this winter by giving away coats in Illinois.
According to ABC's WLS, the Chicago-bred emcee donated $5,000 to purchase the clothing items for kids throughout his native hometown. Lupe reportedly said he wanted to give back to deserving families in Chi-town.
